Nellore Streetlights to have GSM tech

To conserve power and save on electrical bills, the fund starved Nellore civic body is all set to use the global system for mobile communication (GSM) technology to operate 27,027 streetlights across the town. These are being operated manually since ages and are connected to 1,620 odd junction boxes, switching dependent on the mood of 50 odd workers. For instance, street lights glow even after sunrise and are often not switched on even after nightfall, especially in localities away from the main town.

Credit goes to Y. Nageswar Rao, a senior assistant and software developer working in the revenue department.

He was instrumental in developing software for the petition monitoring system and centralised call centres to receive complaints from hostel students and ration cardholders.
